Share folders on the network between Ubuntu and Windows Systems
Here we will explain how to share folders over the network between Windows and Ubuntu Systems.
Share folder in Ubuntu System
There are two ways files can be shared over the network to access them from other Windows or Linux computers:
1- Share it so that everyone can access it on the network without a password
2- Password protection for folders to control sharing.
Method 1 Share folders on the network without password
We will have to do some settings on both Windows and Ubuntu.
Open the terminal and install nautlius-share:
sudo apt-get install nautilus-share
Restart Nautilus:
nautilus -q
1- Enable sharing on Ubuntu
To share a folder in Ubuntu right click on the desired folder and choose Local Network Share:
When you click on Local Network Share you will see the option to share the folder.
Choose Share this folder:
If you see the message "Sharing service not being installed" as in the screenshot, click on Install service and follow the instructions.
You can allow other users to modify the files in the folder.
The guest access option can be checked as well.
You will see that the folder icon has been changed to show that it has been shared.
To stop sharing a folder, simply deselect the Share this folder option.
2- Access the shared folder from the Windows device.
1- Right-click on This PC or My Computer and choose add network location.
Click next.
Now add the location in the following way (in this example the IP of the Ubuntu machine is 192.168.0.102 and the folder name is Share):
You will see the following screen
Click next.
You can access the shared folder from This PC or My Computer.
This provides access from anyone on your network to these files.
